The Difference Between Insurance and Non-Insurance Practices: What to Expect as a New Patient

When it comes to dental care, not all practices operate the same way. Many offices that are “in-network” with insurance companies are required to see 25–30 patients a day, often limiting the amount of time they can spend with each individual. At our office, we’ve chosen a different path. As a fee-for-service practice, we can give every patient the time, attention, and personalized care they truly deserve.

So, what does that actually look like? Let’s walk through our new patient process so you can see the difference for yourself.

A Warm Welcome

Your first visit begins the moment you step through the door. Our front office team greets you and gathers important details such as your health history, medications, lifestyle factors, and current concerns. You’ll also complete standard forms like HIPAA paperwork so we have everything in place to care for you safely and thoroughly.

Comprehensive Records

Next, one of our dental assistants will bring you back for vitals, a minimal set of X-rays (just enough to provide insight without overexposure), and patient photographs for your records. If you have a specific concern—such as a chipped tooth or discomfort—we’ll capture additional images to better understand the issue.

A Full Hour with the Doctor

Unlike most offices where the doctor pops in for a few minutes, you’ll spend a full hour with your dentist. Together, you’ll discuss your chief concern, review your soft tissues, airway, existing dental work, and check for cavities. This thorough approach ensures your treatment plan is tailored to your unique needs, not just an insurance guideline.

Partnering with Your Hygienist

During your first visit, you’ll also spend an hour with your hygienist. This includes a full periodontal evaluation, personalized oral hygiene education, and—if appropriate—a professional cleaning (prophy) on the same day.

Your Treatment Plan, Your Choice

After your exam and cleaning, you’ll receive a customized treatment plan. You can choose to review it the same day or schedule a complimentary follow-up visit. In this presentation, we’ll walk you through your X-rays and photographs, discuss treatment options, and answer your questions in detail. Our goal is to ensure you feel informed, empowered, and in control of your care.

A Thoughtful Send-Off

At the end of your visit, you’ll receive a binder with your photos and treatment plan to take home, along with a gift bag filled with a few of our favorite “Garden Dentist” goodies.

Why It Matters

This process reflects the true difference between an insurance-driven practice and a fee-for-service practice. By limiting the number of patients we see each day, we can focus on building relationships, understanding your needs, and providing care that’s based on what’s best for you—not what’s dictated by an insurance company.

Here, dentistry is about more than fixing teeth—it’s about partnership, education, and trust. And that’s something you’ll feel from your very first visit.
